Citizen journalism “CJ” also known as “participatory” and “public” collects, reports, analyzes and disseminates news and information. The idea behind this participation is to provide independent, accurate, wide-ranging, reliable and relevant information that a democracy like India requires.
A Citizen Journalist can bring a change to the society by using the tools of modern technology and unmatched distribution of internet to create, enhance and report about news, events or write about any topic of common interest on their own.
For example, you might write about a local news or happening in your city or town. You could fact-check a newspaper article from the mainstream media and point out factual errors or unfairness through your participation. You can convey an important message through photos or video footage of a newsworthy event or happening in your town and post it online. You can write or post images or videos about cultural or other events, places of tourism interest, art or culture, etc. in your locality through this platform.
Public Journalism is now being explored via new media such as the use of digital cameras and mobile phones etc. These devices have the potential to transform reporting and provide the power of easy and low-cost reporting in the hands of the Citizen Journalist.
